THE FOUR YEAR OLD PROGRAM
The four-year-old program is geared to children 3.9 years by September. This program is developmentally designed to build on social and educational skills acquired in our three-year-old program. It is designed to provide the child with the needed readiness skills to enter Kindergarten the following fall.
Mission Statement
Our mission is to develop in the child a love of school and learning. We continue encouraging the child's listening, social and readiness skills.
Curriculum
Developmental readiness is the foundation of our academic program. Each child is viewed as a unique individual with a wide range of emotional, social, physical and intellectual capabilities. Our program is designed to meet each child's individual needs and readiness, as 'well as to encourage and enhance their academic growth. The curriculum encompasses many areas including art, music, reading and math readiness, free play and outdoor time. These activities all help to enhance a child's growth.
Reading Readiness Our reading readiness program exposes the children to consonants while emphasizing listening skills and verbal expression. We use a letter of the week approach to reading readiness. We introduce the letters with a puppet and alliterations. In developmental readiness, children take from the puppet activity what they are ready for (initial consonant, letter recognition, or just the teacher doing a puppet show). Readiness and art projects reflect the letter the children are studying each week.
Math Readiness Before children can understand math, they need many readiness skills: patterning, sorting, and spatial recognition to name a few. Through block play, puzzles, using manipulatives, calendar activities and patterning, they achieve the necessary readiness skills.
Art Projects in art help to develop and enhance a child's fine motor skills. It is also an avenue for the child to experiment with and develop their sense of creativity. Pride and excitement in their completed work helps to foster a child's ever emerging self esteem.
Music this is another creative area for each child. We expose the children to a wide range of skills through our varied music program. Rhyming songs and poems help the child to improve both their listening skills and memory skills. Singing for enjoyment in small and large groups allows the child to develop a love of music. Movement songs and activities encourage the child to further develop both gross and fine motor skills
Free Play Time Free play time is given in order to foster a child's social development. Our teachers provide a stimulating environment for the children to develop these skills. Many and varied activity centers are available for the children to experience. Some examples are: the art table, puzzles, housekeeping, easels, cornmeal and water tables, blocks, and chalkboards. While they are enjoying themselves, they are enhancing many skills. They are developing spatial relationships, social interaction skills, and emotional security while in a nurturing and loving school environment.
Outdoor Play This is a chance for the child to develop social skills, and fine and gross motor skills as well as have fun. Our playground has many areas for succeeding with these skills. There are climbing structures, slides, places to be imaginative, bikes, open space for games and sand to play with when the weather permits.
